I think social media is something we use so often that we don’t always realize how much work actually goes into creating content for a brand or organization. Before starting this assignment, I knew that having a consistent look and message was important, but I didn’t realize how many little details you have to think about when creating an entire campaign.
For this project, I used Canva to create five different graphics for OU Admissions and Recruitment, including a Facebook cover, Facebook post, Instagram post, Instagram Story and LinkedIn post. Even though I was creating content for different platforms, I wanted everything to look like it belonged together. After finishing all five designs, I feel like I have a much better understanding of how social media can be used in public relations and why having a clear message is so important.
Social Media Is More Than Just Posting
I think one of the biggest things that makes social media such a useful PR tool is how easy it is to reach and connect with different audiences. Organizations can share information, promote events and opportunities, and communicate with people directly instead of relying only on traditional forms of communication.
For OU Admissions, I think social media is especially important because so many prospective students are already spending time on platforms like Instagram and Facebook. It’s a great way to show students what campus life looks like, what opportunities are available and what they could experience if they attended OU.
I also think social media gives organizations the chance to build relationships with their audiences. Instead of just posting information, they can create content that makes people feel connected to the brand. For my campaign, I wanted prospective students to see OU as a place where they could feel welcomed, get involved and find their place.
Creating Five Graphics That Work Together
One of the biggest things I learned from this assignment is that consistency doesn’t mean every graphic has to look exactly the same.
When I started creating my designs, I knew I wanted to use OU’s crimson and white colors, the OU logo and similar fonts throughout the campaign. I wanted someone to be able to look at any of my five graphics and immediately recognize that they were all connected to OU Admissions.
However, I also wanted each design to be a little different. For my Facebook cover, I focused on the message “Your Future Starts at OU,” while my Facebook post was more about finding your place on campus. My Instagram graphics focused on showing what campus life looks like and encouraging students to visit OU. For LinkedIn, I wanted the design to feel a little more professional, so I focused on academic opportunities and student success.
I think this is really important when creating a social media campaign because not every platform has the same audience or purpose. You want your content to feel consistent, but you also want to make sure it makes sense for the people you’re trying to reach.

Why Consistency Is So Important
Something this project really helped me understand is how important consistency is when it comes to branding. If someone sees a post from OU, I think they should be able to recognize the university through its colors, logo and overall design.
I also learned that consistency goes beyond just how something looks. The message and brand voice need to stay consistent too. For my OU Admissions campaign, I wanted everything to feel positive, welcoming and encouraging because I was trying to reach prospective students who are making a big decision about their future.
Another thing I had to remind myself while designing was that I didn’t need to put a lot of text on every graphic. Sometimes I wanted to add more information, but I realized that keeping things simple actually made the designs look better. Social media posts should catch someone’s attention, and you can always explain more in the caption.
I think finding that balance between having a clear message and keeping the design visually appealing is a big part of creating a successful campaign.

My Experience Using Canva
One thing I really liked about this assignment was getting to work with Canva. After using Photoshop for my previous project, I definitely noticed how much easier Canva was when creating graphics for different social media platforms.
I liked being able to add pictures, shapes, text and logos without having to spend as much time figuring out how everything worked. It also made it easier to keep my colors and fonts consistent across all five designs.
However, just because Canva makes designing easier doesn’t mean you don’t have to think about the details. I still had to make sure my text wasn’t too close to the edges, my photos were positioned correctly and everything looked balanced.
I think Canva is a really helpful tool for public relations professionals because creating social media content is something that often needs to be done quickly. Being able to create different graphics while keeping the same branding can save time and help make sure everything looks professional.

What I Took Away From This Project
Overall, I think this assignment helped me realize that creating a social media campaign involves a lot more than just making a few graphics and posting them. You have to think about your audience, what you’re trying to communicate and how each design fits into the bigger picture.
I also learned that even though you’re using the same brand, you still need to adjust your content depending on the platform. What catches someone’s attention on Instagram might not be what they’re looking for on LinkedIn.
As a public relations student, I know social media is something I’ll continue using throughout my career, so I think this project was a great way to get more experience with creating content for different platforms. I enjoyed being able to try different layouts and photos while still keeping everything connected to OU.
The biggest thing I learned is that a successful social media campaign isn’t just about posting regularly or making something look good. It’s about making sure your content has a purpose, your message stays consistent and your audience understands what you’re trying to communicate.
